It was a disaster, an absolute disaster. Last summer I got hacked. It never even occurred to me. I mean, who would hack a cleaning company? I’m still not sure what they got—customer credit card information? Addresses? Security codes?! I had to notify every customer. The response has ranged from angry to furious. One of my employees had been asking for more hours. She usually does residential jobs during the day, but all I had were a couple of night shifts cleaning offices. She said she’d make the schedule work. I should have known better though, late nights and early mornings don’t mix. She was driving the company van from one job site to another when she nodded off and went off the road.
It’s such a cliché. The cleaning lady stealing from the elderly client. But here we are. One of my clients, an 80-year old woman with bad hearing, accused one of my cleaners of stealing from her. Of taking cash out of her purse, five or 10 dollars at a time. And of taking her diamond earrings. The client’s son is a lawyer, so guilty or not, this is going to cost me.

I spent a lot of money on industrial cleaning equipment. A lot. The whole point of that equipment is to get more done with less work isn’t it? One of my cleaners has been using the combo scrubber / sweeper quite a bit lately. It works really well. Or I thought it did. He’s been out for 4 weeks now because of “repetitive strain injury.” I’d never even heard of it before.
When your property is all in one place, protecting it with security systems, surveillance devices, and sprinkler systems is pretty straightforward. But when your most valuable property, your vehicles and your equipment, are spread out all over town, it’s not so simple. Last year I invested in a ride-on floor scrubber-dryer. I was hesitant at first, but it was worth every penny. Worked great. Until a few guys, probably high school kids, broke into my garage and stole it. You can see them on the security footage, they just climbed on and rode off. Drove it a mile down the road. Right into the pond.
In my line of work your physical office is pretty irrelevant. Bad lighting and outdated carpeting don’t matter much. Machinery and vehicles are a different story however. The other day one of my vans was in an accident. Some bozo ran a red light. The van is wrecked and the equipment, who knows? Without the van, I can’t get the equipment anywhere to find out if it’s damaged.
I rent a small garage where we keep our vehicles, equipment and cleaning supplies. Last year when we got the “storm of the century,” it flooded. I’m not talking about a few inches of water. When I say flooded I’m talking two, two and a half feet. Everything was ruined. And the cherry on top? Calls for our services were pouring in. We had to turn down dozens of jobs.
